Read the rules of this world
Water and electricity shutoff are controlled by the selected preset or sandbox settings. Do not assume a fixed safe day or expect both services to fail together. A multiplayer world may already be well past its starting date when you join.
Fill suitable containers while clean tap water is available. After shutoff, some fixtures retain a limited amount of water; that is a useful stopgap, not a renewable supply. Keep portable drinking water separate from the larger stock you expect to use for other tasks.
Secure a replacement water source
Locate a well, natural water source, or a practical rain-collection arrangement. Rain and surface water can be tainted: inspect the water or container tooltip and purify it with a supported method before drinking. The container and heat source must be suitable for the action.
Test the process while you still have a reserve. Water collection, plumbing, and recipes can differ by game build and mods; verify the available interactions in your save. A nearby river on the map does not by itself solve safe drinking water.
Count the containers your group actually uses before setting a reserve. For an illustrative plan, two survivors using one container each per day need eight containers for four days; a 25% margin brings the target to ten. If six are stored, the shortfall is four. This is planning arithmetic, not a claim about the game's thirst rate or container size.
Make food and lighting independent of the grid
Keep a shelf-stable reserve and plan meals around food that will spoil first. Refrigeration slows spoilage; it is not a permanent solution when electricity is lost. Do not treat cooking as a universal fix for spoiled food.
Keep a battery light or another usable light source available, along with the supplies it needs. Decide what truly needs electricity before hauling appliances to a new base.
A generator is a maintenance commitment
- Learn the connection requirements for your character and game version, and test the setup before depending on it.
- Place and operate the generator outdoors. Indoor fumes are dangerous even when the generator seems conveniently sheltered.
- Check fuel and condition, turn it off before refueling or repairs, and maintain access to it.
- Plan how to power fuel pumps after the grid fails, and reserve enough fuel to reach your next source.
- Expect noise to affect the area. Inspect the surroundings before approaching the machine with a heavy fuel load.
