Getting started

A practical first-week survival plan

Use milestones instead of a rigid calendar. Stabilize shelter, repeat a small supply loop, then prepare for disruptions.

First milestone: a night you can survive

Secure a small shelter, drinking water, food, bandages, and a weapon. Know the exits and the route back before carrying more loot. If those basics are missing on day three, they still take priority over a generator or a distant warehouse.

Mark your shelter and one fallback on the atlas. Markers are useful planning aids; they do not reserve a safehouse or clear a building in the game.

Second milestone: a repeatable supply loop

Pick two or three nearby stops that solve specific shortages. Inspect the route lightly loaded, return home, and collect heavier supplies only after the approach is understood. Keep the first loop short enough to abandon halfway.

Separate an immediate food or medical run from a construction haul. A hammer, saw, and nails can support later work, but hauling every plank you see increases exposure without improving tonight's shelter.

Third milestone: survive an interruption

  • Store clean water and identify a renewable source plus a way to make unsafe water drinkable.
  • Keep shelf-stable food and a light source that do not depend on the electrical grid.
  • Choose an indoor plan for the helicopter event and a fallback if your position becomes compromised.
  • Keep supplies for an evacuation where you can reach them. Check the landing area of any upstairs escape.

Then choose a longer project

A working vehicle, reliable food production, a better shelter, or a useful skill threshold can each be a good next goal. Choose the one that removes your current bottleneck. Do not assume all of them must be finished within seven days.

In co-op, divide jobs by capability and agree on a rally point. A shared destination and a return deadline are more useful than several players independently collecting the same supplies. Use the local checklist to track completion, and export a backup when starting a long run.
