Start with the shortage
Write down what the next trip must solve: drinking water, bandages, a saw, a readable skill book, or fuel. Then choose the relevant map category. A pharmacy or medical location is a sensible place to scout for treatment supplies; a warehouse or hardware store is a sensible tool target. The building type never guarantees a particular item.
Read the route as a round trip. A nearby destination across a fence, woodland, or crowded junction may be harder to return from than a more distant stop on a clear road.
Match the trip to the load
- Food and water: favor a short residential or grocery loop, and carry only what supports the immediate plan.
- Tools and materials: identify hardware or warehouse targets and arrange a way to move heavy items.
- Books: check library, school, and residential targets; take the tier you can actually use.
- Fuel: locate the station, verify pumps and power in your world, and keep enough reserve for a different stop.
- Medical supplies: prepare before an injury makes a long journey urgent.
Scout once, haul later
Approach with space in your inventory and enough energy to leave. Check access, alternate exits, and a parking position before loading. Avoid parking so that one gathering of zombies or another vehicle blocks the only way out.
Set a turn-back condition before entering: a worsening moodle, an unsafe doorway, a damaged weapon, or insufficient daylight can all end the trip. The route succeeds if you return with the needed supplies, even when you leave most containers unopened.
A worked Riverside example: scout the hardware target at 6,372 / 5,320 for the missing tool, then return to your known shelter. The library at 6,435 / 5,262 is another possible stop only if you need a specific book and can still make the return. If access is blocked, record that and leave; do not turn the fallback into an unplanned tour of the riverfront.
Keep useful notes
Use personal markers to distinguish a planned stop from a location you have checked. Record a date, a useful item, or a blocked approach rather than a blanket label such as safe. Your notes live in this browser unless you export or deliberately share them.
Loot respawn depends on the world's settings and other conditions. An empty building is not a reason to assume it will refill tomorrow. For longer trips, use the route notebook to save ordered checkpoints and map links.
