Prepare a vehicle before the long trip

Check the whole transport plan: access, condition, fuel, cargo, road choice, and a way home if the car stops.

A parked car is not yet transport

Inspect the vehicle's mechanical condition and the parts needed for a reliable trip. Fuel, battery charge, engine condition, tires, and access all matter. Finding a key or being able to hotwire a vehicle does not solve the other problems.

Confirm the requirements shown by your current character. Occupation abilities and skill requirements can vary between game versions; old character-build advice is not a substitute for the available in-game interaction.

Plan fuel before loading

Mark the nearest gas station and an alternative on the atlas. Check whether pumps have electricity in your world, and plan generator use if the grid has failed. Siphoning requires a suitable container and a vehicle that actually contains fuel.

Keep a reserve for returning or diverting. Fuel range changes with the vehicle, driving, towing, and game settings; this site does not claim a universal distance per can.

Choose an approach and a parking direction

  • Read the road connections before leaving and keep a second route in mind.
  • Slow down where sight lines, corners, wrecks, or crowds limit stopping room.
  • Leave enough clear space to turn or drive out after loading.
  • Avoid using the only working vehicle as a weapon; impacts can damage the transport you need to escape.
  • Test a towing setup and its handling before depending on it for a long haul.

Keep a walking fallback

Carry water, a usable weapon, basic treatment supplies, and enough knowledge of the route to leave the vehicle. Store bulky loot in a way that does not tempt you to carry everything if you have to abandon it.

For a recovery trip, note the exact coordinates and what failed. Bring the required part or fuel instead of repeatedly visiting a stranded car without solving its problem. Use the route notebook for the outbound stops and mark a separate fallback shelter on the map.

For example, a recovery note for the Muldraugh warehouse trip should include the vehicle position, the failed part, and the walking destination you already checked. Bring that part and its tools on the return. A note that only says warehouse car does not tell another player whether they need gasoline, a charged battery, or room to tow.
